  • Nicotine is highly addictive. Regular use of any nicotine product can lead to dependence, and stopping can produce withdrawal symptoms.
  • Different products deliver nicotine at very different rates — cigarettes in seconds, pouches over 30 to 60 minutes. Read the strength on the package and start low if you're new to a category.
  • Tobacco and vape liquids can be fatally toxic to children and pets in small amounts. Store everything out of reach and in original child-resistant packaging.
  • Smoking and vaping near others exposes them to secondhand emissions. Smoke outside or in well-ventilated areas, away from children and pregnant people.
  • If you want to quit, free, confidential support is available 24/7 from the Smokers' Helpline at 1-877-513-5333.

Nicotine Awareness

Nicotine is addictive, and tobacco and nicotine products deliver it at very different rates. A cigarette puts nicotine into your bloodstream within seconds; a pouch releases it gradually over 30 to 60 minutes; a vape sits somewhere in between depending on coil, wattage, and how you draw. Strength varies widely within a category too — read the milligrams on the package and start with a lower strength if you're trying a new product or coming back after a break.

Smoke Safely

Always extinguish cigarettes and cigars completely before disposing — most home fires caused by smoking start in living-room furniture and bedding. Use a stable ashtray, never smoke in bed or while drowsy, and keep open flames away from dry vegetation. If you smoke at home, ensure good ventilation and avoid smoking around children, pregnant people, or anyone with respiratory conditions. Outside is almost always the safer choice.

Storage & Safety

Always store tobacco and nicotine products in a secure location that is out of reach of children and pets. Liquid nicotine and pouches are especially dangerous if swallowed — small amounts can be fatal. Keep products in their original packaging whenever possible: the packaging carries health warnings, tax stamps, and freshness information. Loose-leaf and cigars are best kept in a cool, dry place to prevent mold.

Health & Quitting

Long-term tobacco and nicotine use is linked to cancer, heart disease, lung disease, and other serious conditions. If you find yourself using more than intended, or struggling without it, you may be developing nicotine dependence. Quitting is possible — most people who quit successfully needed multiple attempts. Talk to your doctor about cessation aids like nicotine replacement therapy (gum, patches, lozenges) or prescription medications that can help.

If you experience chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or other emergency symptoms, call 911 immediately.
